CO2 emission estimation and monitoring
Priority and Speed Advice
Proof of delivery
Eco-drive support
Thessaloniki is very advanced in terms of smart logistics, thanks to activities such as EURIDICE (EURopean Inter-Disciplinary research on Intelligent Cargo for Efficient, safe and environment-friendly logistics), the on-going Compass4D project on C-ITS as well as existing platforms on logistics such as the FRETIS platform (integrated multimodal supply chain management).
The CO-GISTICS pilot site covers the port area and Tsimiski Street, which is one of the main arterials of the city serving large numbers of daily traffic to and from the city centre due to the high concentration of business, leisure and housing activities. Tsimiski Street is very congested during the morning and afternoon peak hours. A modern traffic management system equipped with modern traffic measuring, monitoring and adaptive control devices was installed in 2012 in the central area of Thessaloniki aiming to efficiently manage the traffic flow during a typical working day (approximately 50.000 vehicles, 60% of which are through-traffic).
10 trucks and 100 intelligent cargo items will be used for piloting four CO-GISTICS services (CO2 emission estimation and monitoring, Priority and Speed Advice, Eco-drive support, and Proof of delivery). More specifically, 10 trucks from the fleet operator SEAWAY will be equipped with ITS G5 and LTE compliant onboard units. These OBUs will communicate with various cooperative ITS G5 compliant road side units installed along strategic arterials of the city and with the Traffic Management Centre in order to receive the information needed for the provision of the three services. The trucks will receive advice on optimum speed when approaching the equipped traffic lights, eco-drive support during the whole driving cycle as well as CO2 emission monitoring. 100 cargo items will be used to provide footprint monitoring at cargo level as well as proof of delivery services. The proximity of the pilot area to the port of Thessaloniki will allow CO-GISTICS services to be piloted in a multimodal environment of cargo transport.
The cooperative services of CO-GISTICS will contribute to the reduction of freight transport induced emissions in Thessaloniki by applying eco-driving support and increasing the environmental awareness of truck drivers, who will be informed about the CO2 emissions of their activities and how this can be reduced by applying eco-driving technologies and environmental speed profiles.
CO-GISTICS will also increase the efficiency of the freight sector by reducing fuel consumption. The efficiency of the freight chain will also be increased, due to quick invoice release provided by the proof of delivery. Finally, truck drivers will benefit through reduced stress and improved working conditions through the provision of information regarding traffic lights status when approaching urban intersections.
